Lyrical Ballads began with Coleridge's haunting tale, The Rime of the Ancient Mariner, a ballad that may be interpreted either as a story of sin, punishment, repentance, and forgiveness, or, from an Eastern viewpoint, a classic expression of karma. The publication of Lyrical Ballads by Wordsworth and Coleridge in 1798 was the most dramatic event in English literature since John Milton's Paradise Lost. Wordsworth along with Samuel Taylor Coleridge began the period of English Romanticism. He was named Poet Laureate of England in 1843, a position he held until the end of his life. He married Mary Hutchinson in 1802 and they were blessed with five children.
